  • “If your photographs aren’t good enough, you’re not close enough”.

I first heard this many years ago when as a young freelance photographer working for AP in southern Europe I suggested to a visiting senior editor that lax security and one of the longest civilian runways in the world made the city’s airport an obvious destination for hijacked aircraft and that the absence in the bureau of any lens longer than an old 200mm would mean that we’d be hard pressed to cover it. ”If your photographs aren’t good enough, you’re not close enough,” he said but what he meant was, “I have other priorities”.

  • How Well Do You Really Know Your Camera?

These questions are really aimed at the digital SLR users, so if you’re a compact camera user some of the questions won’t directly apply. Even so, a good chunk of them can be answered with any digital camera. Film users will probably have even less questions that are applicable.

  • When less is more.

It can often be incredibly tempting to try and fit more information into a photograph. Understandably so – wherever you turn, you find a barrage of information. Minimalism truly is a lost art in photography, and you’d be surprised to find that it’s actually quite difficult to get right.

  • DIY homemade GaryFong Like Light Sphere.

Gary Fong has become a de-facto standard for speed light diffusion. The accessories made by Gary include the famous Lightsphere and lots of other small flash improvements.I have tried to make some flash modifiers in the past, like a flash mounted softbox or an improvised beauty dish. Zond is following this approach with a Lightsphere solution.

This photo blog was born out of the frustration with photo procrastination between three friends. The best way to improve at anything is to practice, a lot. So we made a pact – to complete a photographic assignment every week, no matter what, on everything and anything. This isn’t a competition – there are no judges, no scores. The goal is to become better photographers, and share ideas while we’re doing it.

  • Ziser Sets New Off Camera Flash Record.

That’s right, David Ziser used one off-camera flash to create a record number of light directions on the scene!!! OK – already with all the hype – I just wanted to see what it looked like in print. I don’t know if I set any record or not, but I did managed to light this image with only one flash! So you say – OK, Mr. Ziser, How did you get a back light on the subjects along with that very nice loop lighting pattern on their faces, and get the ambient balanced perfectly as well?? If it’s only one flash, then you must have used some “Smoke and Mirrors” for the shot. Well, you would be half right if that’s what you thought – smoke – NO; mirrors – YES.

  • Ultra high-speed Compact Flash – do you need it?.

Of the three DSLRs we tested standared high speed and UDMA cards with, the fastest shooter – the Canon EOS-40D – worked better with the slower card. This demonstrates that high speed performance is not always enhanced by the use of UDMA cards – if your camera doesn’t state UDMA card support, it’s almost certainly better to stick with 133x high speed cards, both to save money and to maintain optimal performance. The only exception is if you use large cards and don’t want to wait for long periods when emptying them. Even so, you will need to invest in a UDMA card reader and, most likely, a Firewire expansion port. But if you shoot RAW and your camera does support UDMA, you probably will benefit from using UDMA cards.

  • Perversions and recycling.

  • Night photography: Digital and/or film.

Before the recent rise of the digital SLR, medium format film cameras were often the tool of choice for night photography. For many night photographers this still holds true. Due to longer focal lengths, and film reciprocity, a standard full moon exposure for medium format film can often run in the 15-20 minute range at f/8. With clear skies, a 15-20 minute exposure produces a star trail length that hits a personal sweet spot for me. I will often push the Canon 5D into the 10-12 minute range to get longer star trails. With noise reduction this ties up the camera for 20-25 minutes per shot, giving you shorter star trails than film, and less productivity.

  • Photos taken with fast lenses.

The hulking Mt. Prospect 90mm lens and the Rodenstock 68mm lens (both are f/1.0) are notably sharper and less “foggy”, despite all lenses being crisp and clear through the viewfinder. A focussing rail would make critical focussing much easier, but at f/1.0 (and f/0.75), there was never a problem with getting a high enough shutter speed to hand-hold the lenses (the 90mm lens is about 2 kilograms!).

  • About macro extension tubes.

All lenses have a limit to how close they can focus. A typical lens, for example, may not be able to focus on anything closer than 30cm. This is because as objects move closer to the lens, the focal point moves further back, eventually beyond the plane of the film or sensor. An obvious way around this problem is to move the lens further away from the camera. That’s what macro extension tubes do.

  • 13 Tips for Using and Caring for Memory Cards.

    5. Avoid Filling Your Cards Completely
I have a friend who recently had an issue with a memory card. When he took it into the store he bought it from for advice they asked if he’d completely filled the card with images. When he said he had they told him that this could occasionally cause problems with some types of cards. I’d not heard this before and am a little skeptical about it myself – but it’s probably worth keeping in mind. I guess the advice is to regularly take images off your cards rather than doing it just when they are full. This is common sense anyway as it stops the heartbreak of losing gigabytes of images if you lose a card/camera or have a card error with a three quarters full memory card.

  • Photographing Copyrighted Work.

Once in a while the subject of copyright in photography comes forward.
It is an area where, understandably, there is much misconception, mainly because there is not a “universal” law on copyrights in photography. Actually, different countries have different laws and even inside the same country, like the US, copyright laws change from state to state.

  • VR (Vibration Reduction) System.

Vibration Reduction (VR) system compensates for image blur caused by small, involuntary movements (from wobbly hands, shooting from a moving vehicle, etc) which are called camera shake. This system can be found in many Nikon products, such as interchangeable lenses for SLR cameras, digital cameras and binoculars. In this issue, the principles of VR will be explained by using an interchangeable SLR lens as an example.

  • Travel Photography is Dead.

I’ve now heard “travel photography is dead” from the mouths and pens of people who “know what they’re talking about” several times in the last week. My initial reaction was a defensive, “the hell it is! You can have my travel photography when you pry it from my cold, dead hands!”

  • White Balance, the Secret Weapon.

How many times do we need to be told that exposure is not just shutter speed and f-stop but, even more important, white balance? Reminders may be annoying, but I know absolutely that if I don’t take the extra time to evaluate each new lighting situation, I will pay later with mediocre quality and sometimes serious correction problems. The complexity and quantity of settings required to perfect digital capture are admittedly hard to keep track of in a controlled shoot—mind-boggling in the fast pace of location events. It’s understandable why automatic settings that are responsible for the current shallow ease of entry into commercial photography also falsely lure the professional seeking to mitigate her workload on site.

  • The optical lens manufacturing business heats up.

Researchers at the Fraunhofer Institute for Mechanics of Materials have developed and optimized the “hot embossing” technology for the manufacturing of glass lenses. Glass lenses can nowadays be found in cameras, automobile headlamps, and a variety of optical sensors. Today, the lenses are produced by “precision molding”, whereby the glass is heated together with the forming die and then pressed into shape. The new technology is up to 10 times faster, a good 70 percent cheaper, and produces lenses of comparable quality…

  • Nikon D3 and memory card speeds. Сравнение скорости работы с Nikon D3 CF-карт SanDisk Extreme III, SanDisk Extreme IV, ATP Pro Max II и Apacer Photo Steno III pro 150X.

Well, this is it. The SanDisk Extreme IV is still the fastest card on the block – it’s THE choice if you absolutely need the utmost in speed, as the tests above clearly show.
But remember – these cards are expensive and unless you’re a reporter, you probably don’t need all that speed. Only buy it if you really need it, otherwise, you’re probably better off with a larger, slower card.

  • Fujinon Lenses.

Over the last couple years, I’ve been fortunate enough to use several Fujinon large format lenses. I was first attracted to the Fuji large format lenses due to some very unique offerings. For example, the 240mm f9 Fujinon A and the 450mm f12.5 Fujinon C both offer a combination of tremendous coverage, outstanding sharpness, tiny size and very light weight that is unavailable in comparable focal lengths from any other lens manufacturer. I purchased these two lenses new from Badger Graphic Sales in March, 1998. In the two years since, they have become two of my favorite lenses. Based on the compact size and excellent performance of these two lenses, I decided I to try some other Fuji lenses.

  • Eye-Fi Card Review.

It’s not often we review accessories, and we’ve never really reviewed an SD card, certainly not on its own. That said this isn’t any ordinary SD card and it does offer something fairly unique; WiFi connectivity and automated image transfer for any camera which takes SD. As you can see from the image above the Eye-Fi card is the same size as any other SD card but contains not just a WiFi unit but also 2 GB of flash storage (an impressive enough feat alone). Retailing at $99 it’s not massively expensive either.

It takes work and an attention to detail, but mastering it and becoming efficient at it can certainly improve certain aspects of your photography.

Are You Taking Snapshots?

We’re sorry, but we did not find this file suitable as stock. With the rapid growth of the iStock collection, we give valuable consideration to each file but unfortunately cannot accept all submissions.
This is called the “Subpar” rejection. Perhaps you’re familiar with it? It means there’s a certain something lacking from your image that is holding it back from the collection. But what does that mean, “not suitable”? What isn’t suitable about it? What the heck is Subpar around these parts?

How Even a Teenager Can Earn from Photography.

Okay, maybe not just any old teenager. Canadian photographer, Joey Lawrence, might still be shy of his eighteenth birthday but he has the eye and attitude of a grizzled old pro, and the skills to match. He has awards from Microsoft, Bogen and the United Way but more importantly, he already has regular checks from clients and a calendar bursting with bookings.

It’s a blog, blog world – the photo blog of Magnum Photos.

There are blogs about family vacations, cooking, knitting, little dog puppies, cats, hidden sexual fantasies, about photography, art and so much more. Despite the fact that nobody could ever possibly read all the blogs out there due to the sheer tremendous number of thousands and thousands of blogs, most of the time it wouldn’t be worth it anyway. Frankly but at the same time nicely put: Most blogs are not very interesting at all. At least not if you are not the author or a close friend of the author.
But of course there are many, many exceptions to this as well. There are a whole bunch of blogs that are worth reading, that you can learn from, that can inspire you and broaden your horizon.
In an effort to bring some more inspiration to all of us I have collected 83 links to blogs about photography, art, multimedia and journalism, that I hope might be a source of good information for you. You might know a lot of them, or even all, but maybe you can find a couple of blogs that you did not yet know.

Five Fantastic Flickr Photographers.

As I’ve recently become more active with Flickr, I’ve encountered some amazing photographers. I realize that I’ve only seen a glimpse of the artists out there, and I’m truly excited to continue exploring this community. Out of my 100 contacts (which isn’t many at all), I find myself being drawn to the works of a select few. Here are five photographers who absolutely amaze me.

Two Dramatic Lighting Setups.

Very Soft Light from Behind the Photographer.
This is an easy setup to do whether you have a large softbox or not. You can substitute a large scrim for wide, full light. Simply shoot from in front of the light, and make sure the position is straight on. Notice that the shadow is very distinct, yet soft… sort of like a ringlight.
