  Just when you think you’ve gotten a handle on the JPEG versus RAW debate and which color space is better than the other, along comes a new choice to make. From the earliest days of support for raw file capture with digital cameras, they have always been 12-bits per pixel. Now both the Nikon D300 and D3, as well as the Canon 40D can do 14-bit raw captures. But since 14-bit files are obviously bigger, are they really any better?

  Then holding that Dynamic Range value constant examine other camera models.
  For example, you should get about the same quality of image from a D200 at ISO 200 as the D300 at ISO 560 (1.5 stops) or the D3 at ISO 1600 (3 stops).

  Seeing that as I’m writing this I am mid-travel on my way to Trinidad, I felt it appropriate to talk a little bit about gear safety while traveling. As seasoned CameraPorn readers may know from previous posts, I from time-to-time travel to Trinidad (read here, here and here). We have put together a page that you can print out, cut it into multiple pieces, laminate it, and have some quick-use checklists handy. If you laminate them you can use a dry-erase pen to check off the items you want and then wipe it off to use it again.

Coincidently, I was in the middle of photographing a three-day steamed vegetal food-packaging shoot. Since I had just had to deal with that very problem, I thought I’d document what went into a professional food photography job where capturing steam was a very important aspect of the shoot.
