Hyperfocal Distance.

First, let’s cover what hyperfocal photography is. Simply put, hyperfocal photography is when you adjust the aperture and point of focus so that everything from a desired point (usually the foreground) to infinity is in focus. It takes work and an attention to detail, but mastering it and becoming efficient at it can certainly improve certain aspects of your photography.

Are You Taking Snapshots?

We’re sorry, but we did not find this file suitable as stock. With the rapid growth of the iStock collection, we give valuable consideration to each file but unfortunately cannot accept all submissions.
This is called the “Subpar” rejection. Perhaps you’re familiar with it? It means there’s a certain something lacking from your image that is holding it back from the collection. But what does that mean, “not suitable”? What isn’t suitable about it? What the heck is Subpar around these parts?

100 Awesome High Resolution Photoshop Brushes.

Lets dive today into a sea of brushes. Hundreds of thousands of sets are lying undiscovered like pirate treasures all over the web. Due to this phenomenally vast amount of Photoshop brushes available, directories are becoming very popular lately.
Designers are collecting them like mad. Not to mention that finding the most unique or bizarre set is a must.
And believe me, in this case, size does matter… So, here’s my contribution to all the Photoshop brushes starving hordes of designers and artists, including myself: 100 Awesome High Resolution Photoshop Brushes. And don’t forget to check the list of brushes sites and directories at the end of the article!

How Even a Teenager Can Earn from Photography.

Okay, maybe not just any old teenager. Canadian photographer, Joey Lawrence, might still be shy of his eighteenth birthday but he has the eye and attitude of a grizzled old pro, and the skills to match. He has awards from Microsoft, Bogen and the United Way but more importantly, he already has regular checks from clients and a calendar bursting with bookings.

It’s a blog, blog world – the photo blog of Magnum Photos.

There are blogs about family vacations, cooking, knitting, little dog puppies, cats, hidden sexual fantasies, about photography, art and so much more. Despite the fact that nobody could ever possibly read all the blogs out there due to the sheer tremendous number of thousands and thousands of blogs, most of the time it wouldn’t be worth it anyway. Frankly but at the same time nicely put: Most blogs are not very interesting at all. At least not if you are not the author or a close friend of the author.
But of course there are many, many exceptions to this as well. There are a whole bunch of blogs that are worth reading, that you can learn from, that can inspire you and broaden your horizon.
In an effort to bring some more inspiration to all of us I have collected 83 links to blogs about photography, art, multimedia and journalism, that I hope might be a source of good information for you. You might know a lot of them, or even all, but maybe you can find a couple of blogs that you did not yet know.

Five Fantastic Flickr Photographers.

As I’ve recently become more active with Flickr, I’ve encountered some amazing photographers. I realize that I’ve only seen a glimpse of the artists out there, and I’m truly excited to continue exploring this community. Out of my 100 contacts (which isn’t many at all), I find myself being drawn to the works of a select few. Here are five photographers who absolutely amaze me.

Two Dramatic Lighting Setups.

Very Soft Light from Behind the Photographer.
This is an easy setup to do whether you have a large softbox or not. You can substitute a large scrim for wide, full light. Simply shoot from in front of the light, and make sure the position is straight on. Notice that the shadow is very distinct, yet soft… sort of like a ringlight.

  • Cross processing.

A lot of people have asked how I did the effect on the photo of Harry and the flag. So here’s my version of “cross processing”. (Sorry, very corny)

  • Directional light from your on-camera flash.

Most often when photographers start using their flashguns out of the directly-forward position, they move the flash head to point 45’ or 90’ upward. The idea here is to bounce flash off the ceiling. Even though this is an improvement in most cases over using the flashgun pointing directly forward, this is also most often not ideal. We can improve on this.

  • A New Level Of Professionalism.

A professional model wrote me today and enclosed a letter she received from a photographer unhappy with her non-response to a demand to shoot with her. I am not going to link this guy as his work is so bad as to be laughable, and you will have to trust me on that. Truly dreadful stuff. And his profile is just creepy…
However, he demands a response so I sent one. The model couldn’t care less, she is kind of busy being, you know, a model. I thought I would share the type of stuff that makes it hard for all of us to get any respect. My response to him below.

  • Placing the Center of Interest.

Sometimes it’s pretty obvious where the centre of interest has to go and there really aren’t a whole lot of choices. If the main subject basically fills the frame, then that’s pretty much the end of the discussion. It’s hard in a head and shoulders portrait to place it at the side without looking very odd. Should the portrait be more environmental, then your options open up considerably.

  • The Secret to Selling Your Vacation Photos.

Usually, people go on vacation to get away from work. But when the work is taking pictures — something most photographers look forward to doing even on their own time — then earning on vacation can be both a pile of fun and a great way to contribute to the cost of your trip.
Here’s how you can take sellable images while you’re soaking up the sun.

  • Minimalism in Photography: What you had to say.

If you are a follower reader of this blog, you are probably aware that some weeks ago I called for submissions for a Group Writing Project dedicated to Minimalism in Photography.

  • Minimalism also in Photography.

Minimalism is indeed the art of less. As a life philosophy, minimalists focus on a few essential elements of life disregarding or making less use of everything else.

  • Get the Lensbaby Look in Photoshop.

You’ve probably seen the Lensbaby look, even if you didn’t know its name — part of an image is sharp, but the rest of it is dramatically blurred. If you don’t have the money or time for the gadget itself, mimic its effect with this software how-to.

The Genius of Photography

  • Programme 1: Fixing the Shadows This tells the story of the inventions of photography and the way in which it became an integral part of the modern world. It describes the remarkable achievements of the pioneer photographers, the revolution that took place when George Eastman made photography available to the masses with the invention of the Kodak brand and the story of Jacques-Henri Lartigue, the child photographer and ultimate amateur. .
  • Programme 2: Documents for Artists Following the First World War, photography was the central medium of the age. ‘Anyone who fails to understand photography’, said the photographer Lazlo Moholy-Nagy ‘will be one of the illiterates of the future’. Episode Two examines in detail the work of some of the greatest and most influential modern photographers: Alexander Rodchenko, August Sander, Man Ray, Walker Evans and Bill Brandt. With contributions from Martin Parr, Bernd and Hilla Becher and Mark Haworth-Booth.
  • Programme 3: Right Place, Right Time? ‘Being in the right place at the right time’, ‘the decisive moment’, ‘getting in close’—in the popular imagination this is photography at its best, a medium that makes us eyewitnesses to the moments when history is made. Set against the backdrop of the Second World War and its aftermath, this examines how photographers dealt with dramatic and tragic events like D-Day, the Holocaust and Hiroshima With contributions from Magnum legends Philip Jones Griffiths and Susan Meiselas, soldier-lensman Tony Vaccaro and Jon Snow.
  • Programme 4: Paper Movies The three decades from the late 1950s onwards was the real golden age of photographic journeys. Programme 4 relives the journeys that produced some of the ‘greatest paper movies’ ever: Including Robert Frank’s odyssey through 50s America and William Klein’s one-man assault on the sidewalks of New York. It also examines the arrival of colour as a credible medium for ‘serious’ photographers, as controversial at the time as Dylan going electric. Contributors include legendary photographers like William Klein, William Eggleston, Robert Adams, Joel Sternfeld, Joel Meyerowitz and artist Ed Ruscha.
  • Programme 5: We are Family Having conquered the street and the road, photographers approached the final frontier: the home, the self, private life. Programme 5 is about the pictures that photographers take of other people and the pictures they take of themselves. It’s about what happens when photography translates personal relationships into photographic ones. The chronological heartland of the programme is the 1970s (the ‘me’ decade) and the 1980s (the ‘me, me, me’ decade) and includes examination of Diane Arbus’s ‘freaks’, Richard Avedon’s confrontations with celebrities like Marylin Monroe and the confessional diaries of Nan Goldin and Araki.
  • Programme 6: Snap Judgements The final programme asks what a photograph is worth these days. We also look at the impact of the digital post-production techniques that make anything possible and the rediscovery of techniques which are taking photography back to the 19th century. With contributions from Jeff Wall, Andreas Gursky, Gregory Crewdson and China’s leading photographer Wang Qingsong.

  • Macro Tutorials.
  • Photoshop Resources. Photoshop.
  • Lightroom Presets.
  • Lightroom Tips.
  • Create Stock Photos.

  • Eyeshadow Photoshop Brushes.

A set of Photoshop brushes made up of various shapes of eyeshadow. It includes just about every one of the traditional eye shadow shapes, either broken up into individual brushes… or all together. It also includes various glittery effects, patterned eye makeup, and face painting styled eye accents (a butterfly and a swirl). It should make your Photoshop makeup applications much easier and more fun, without having to resort to the plain old one-color-without-much-shape shadow job. Brushes are included for both the right and left eyes.

  • Public Photography – Stop And Search.

It’s useful to have a business card even if you are not a full time professional photographer. It makes you seem more professional and to some people that’s reassuring. It’s also a quick way to sell a print if the people who engage you are tourists. I’ve sold a few prints this way.

  • Public Photography And The Law.

I was recently sent an interesting article by one of my readers who is employed within the UK’s Ministry Of Justice (MOJ) directorate. The article in question was from the excellent magazine Justice Of The Peace and detailed a recent legal of great relevance to the photography world. This was the case of Murray (By his litigation friends) v. Express Newspapers and Another.

  • Mounting and Finishing Photographs.

Most of my pictures are sold as mounted prints and I usually do the mounting myself. Please Note: Rather than “mount”, my American friends tend to use the term “mat” . I use the terms interchangeably – I’m like that. I also work exclusively in metric apart from for picture framing where inches just seems easier!

  • Avoiding cliches in landscape photography.

It is very easy to take the exact same snapshot as everyone else. Especially when it comes to beautiful, scenic locations and landscapes – The very thing that makes them so appealing to you, has almost definitely made them appealing to hundreds/thousands of other photographers over the years. The task of creating a unique photo is daunting – how does one find a distinguishing vision in a scene that has already been done thousands upon thousands of times?

  • Color Hamonization.

Harmonic colors are sets of colors that are aesthetically pleasing in terms of human visual perception. In this paper, we present a method that enhances the harmony among the colors of a given photograph or of a general image, while remaining faithful, as much as possible, to the original colors. Given a color image, our method finds the best harmonic scheme for the image colors. It then allows a graceful shifting of hue values so as to fit the harmonic scheme while considering spatial coherence among colors of neighboring pixels using an optimization technique. The results demonstrate that our method is capable of automatically enhancing the color “look-and-feel” of an ordinary image. In particular, we show the results of harmonizing the background image to accommodate the colors of a foreground image, or the foreground with respect to the background, in a cut-and-paste setting. Our color harmonization technique proves to be useful in adjusting the colors of an image composed of several parts taken from different sources.
