  Many photographers proudly say that they work only with natural light. But what is natural? They usually mean existing or ambient light, including daylight, shade, incandescent and fluorescent, which can all be broken down into even more specific categories. We use qualitative terms like diffused, direct, spot, down, specular and reflected to further define illumination. If “natural” includes reflectors, light bulbs and tubes, what possible reason is there to exclude strobe?

  I received an excellent question from one of my readers who asked what type of camera I use for shooting landscapes and flowers and the like. I think it’s an excellent question because most folks associate great images with the camera used. The reality is that there are two factors that have more impact on your final image than which camera you shot it with. The camera really is only going to help you out with one factor in landscapes and that is with your resolution. Ok, that’s really a simplification of things, but in general, fast frames per second and low noise at high ISO really aren’t factors (all of you camera-holics out there may now begin bashing me in the comment section). If you are shooting in RAW, then it doesn’t really even matter how good the camera white balance settings are since you will adjust that in software after the shot.

  I just saw War Photographer, the documentary based on James Nachtwey’s important photography, over the weekend. It’s a riveting documentary that takes you behind the lens of one of America’s greatest war photographers. While much of the movie details Nachtwey’s amazing reportage with war, much of it also deals with many other places in the world that he has photographed and reported on. Famine in Africa, poverty in Indonesia, and other important topics are examined from a photographer’s perspective.

  О пальцах вообще разговор особый.   Over the last few weeks I got a few emails asking me what is the drive behind DIYP. That sent me to my deep observations state where I had some discussions with myself on the reasons I keep DIYP.   This is a DIY project I have had in mind for a while now. When I purchased my studio flash heads, they came with a couple of small softboxes. Although I prefer to use translucent umbrellas whenever I can (small, light, easy to transport), there are times when a softbox is a better solution. While I could use the studio head softboxes in some circumstances with my small strobes, there was no way of effectively holding the flash in place without a lot of jerry rigging. To this end, I wanted to design a softbox that would be light, reasonably strong and durable, adaptable (double diffuser, grid attachment, barn doors etc.) at a later date and have a quick and easy way to mount the flash.

  Which brings us to the Sigma DP-1, the subject of this report. For the first time we have a shirt-pocket sized digicam using a roughly APS-C sized sensor. This is approximately the size used in popular DSLRs such as the Canon 40D and Nikon D300, and slightly larger than the 4/3 format used by Olympus and others in their DSLRs.

  There are very few people who have more opportunity to view Northern Lights than those of us living in Central and Northern Alaska. I shoot the lights. A lot. I shoot for 6 hours or more some nights. Some nights they are out 5 minutes. Other nights, 5 hours. Sometimes it’s chilly.

  Движение в кадре можно показать несколькими способами, начиная с банального “замораживания” объекта съемки в полете, прыжке или очень неестественной позе, в результате чего становится понятно, что такого быть не могло и у человека просто странно раздувались щеки от встречного ветра и заканчивая смазыванием тех или иных объектов в кадре.
