I got this lens for my birthday last year, and it’s the most challenging lens I’ve ever used. The 3D effect one can get from it is very cool, but the lens has some severe limitations.

5. Avoid Filling Your Cards Completely
I have a friend who recently had an issue with a memory card. When he took it into the store he bought it from for advice they asked if he’d completely filled the card with images. When he said he had they told him that this could occasionally cause problems with some types of cards. I’d not heard this before and am a little skeptical about it myself – but it’s probably worth keeping in mind. I guess the advice is to regularly take images off your cards rather than doing it just when they are full. This is common sense anyway as it stops the heartbreak of losing gigabytes of images if you lose a card/camera or have a card error with a three quarters full memory card.

After a long week of editing videos (sorry guys but I’m a photographer and this things takes time to edit and render afterwards) and images from the meeting in Brussels I can honestly say that it was a MAJOR success.

My friend Dan Zeis has been shooting (among other things) Marching Band Competitions for the past couple of years and I help him out from time to time with it. He’s made a decent event business out of this, selling prints and gifts to the band parents via his website.

Way back in 1993, he shot a photograph of 7-year-old Dorsi Bonner dressed up as a clown for Family Fun Magazine. In 1996, Menuez turned the image over to RF distributor PhotoDisc, which is owned by Getty. In 2001, the photo ended up on the packaging of a Fuji disposable camera 2-pack. In 2004, Bonner showed up at a party where some friends had one of the Fuji 2-packs. “Isn’t that you?!?” they asked.

Once in a while the subject of copyright in photography comes forward.
It is an area where, understandably, there is much misconception, mainly because there is not a “universal” law on copyrights in photography. Actually, different countries have different laws and even inside the same country, like the US, copyright laws change from state to state.

Vibration Reduction (VR) system compensates for image blur caused by small, involuntary movements (from wobbly hands, shooting from a moving vehicle, etc) which are called camera shake. This system can be found in many Nikon products, such as interchangeable lenses for SLR cameras, digital cameras and binoculars. In this issue, the principles of VR will be explained by using an interchangeable SLR lens as an example.

I didn’t know I could do that with my flash! You know, the gear we use today is so sophisticated – heck, just look at the size of the manuals available when you purchase that loved camera. The last month or so we’ve added so many digitial photography tutorials that I thought it was important to make a page that pulls them all together. I guess it can be thought of as a free online digital photography course. The technical side of the photography tutorials are useful for those with SLR digital cameras.

I’ve now heard “travel photography is dead” from the mouths and pens of people who “know what they’re talking about” several times in the last week. My initial reaction was a defensive, “the hell it is! You can have my travel photography when you pry it from my cold, dead hands!”

How many times do we need to be told that exposure is not just shutter speed and f-stop but, even more important, white balance? Reminders may be annoying, but I know absolutely that if I don’t take the extra time to evaluate each new lighting situation, I will pay later with mediocre quality and sometimes serious correction problems. The complexity and quantity of settings required to perfect digital capture are admittedly hard to keep track of in a controlled shoot—mind-boggling in the fast pace of location events. It’s understandable why automatic settings that are responsible for the current shallow ease of entry into commercial photography also falsely lure the professional seeking to mitigate her workload on site.

It’s not easy to sell camera phone photos. The quality is usually low and the prices are often lower. Even Scoopt’s 10 biggest hits seem to have been largely shot on digital cameras rather than camera phones. But that doesn’t mean that if you do happen to be in the right place at the right time, you won’t get coverage.

Researchers at the Fraunhofer Institute for Mechanics of Materials have developed and optimized the “hot embossing” technology for the manufacturing of glass lenses. Glass lenses can nowadays be found in cameras, automobile headlamps, and a variety of optical sensors. Today, the lenses are produced by “precision molding”, whereby the glass is heated together with the forming die and then pressed into shape. The new technology is up to 10 times faster, a good 70 percent cheaper, and produces lenses of comparable quality…

Well, this is it. The SanDisk Extreme IV is still the fastest card on the block – it’s THE choice if you absolutely need the utmost in speed, as the tests above clearly show.
But remember – these cards are expensive and unless you’re a reporter, you probably don’t need all that speed. Only buy it if you really need it, otherwise, you’re probably better off with a larger, slower card.

This may sound silly, but I absolutely hate cropping in Photoshop, and go out of my way to avoid it. I want to do my composing in the camera, so if I wind up having to crop later in Photoshop, I feel like I didn’t “Get it right in the camera,” and it drives me nuts.

Over the last couple years, I’ve been fortunate enough to use several Fujinon large format lenses. I was first attracted to the Fuji large format lenses due to some very unique offerings. For example, the 240mm f9 Fujinon A and the 450mm f12.5 Fujinon C both offer a combination of tremendous coverage, outstanding sharpness, tiny size and very light weight that is unavailable in comparable focal lengths from any other lens manufacturer. I purchased these two lenses new from Badger Graphic Sales in March, 1998. In the two years since, they have become two of my favorite lenses. It’s not often we review accessories, and we’ve never really reviewed an SD card, certainly not on its own. That said this isn’t any ordinary SD card and it does offer something fairly unique; WiFi connectivity and automated image transfer for any camera which takes SD. As you can see from the image above the Eye-Fi card is the same size as any other SD card but contains not just a WiFi unit but also 2 GB of flash storage (an impressive enough feat alone). Retailing at $99 it’s not massively expensive either.

When strolling at my local autostore I stumbled across this very interesting gadget. It is a windshield mount for a GPS device. The natural thing for me, being the why-don’t-you-stop-and-ask-for-directions-said-the-wife kinda guy that I am, and the natural and logical thing for me is to buy a GPS. However, those babies cost millions. I had no alternative but to go to my other hobby – photography and see how I can use this mount for my photography studio.

Here is an example and demonstration of my most often used portrait lighting set-up. I call it my “business portrait” lighting set-up or my three light portrait lighting set-up. It’s nothing fancy, just good solid lighting, and it’s very acceptable to the business community. There are lots of corporations and companies that want business portraits for brochures and advertising purposes. This is the perfect lighting set-up for the commercial photographer that needs to get something nice and get it fast.
