- Photographing under fluorescent lights. Почему при съемке при лампах дневного света творится всякая фигня с экспозицией и балансом белого. И как с этом бороться.
The reason for this is simple, fluorescent lights flicker. Too fast for your eyes to see, but depending on your shutter speed, your camera may be able to pick up the fluctuations. If the light uses a magnetic ballast, it will flicker ‘off’ 100-120 times a second (2 times for every cycle of the 50-60Hz line power). At high enough shutter speeds, one frame might be taken while the light output is at its peak, and another frame taken while the light is at its lowest resulting in significant exposure differences. At slower shutter speeds, the fluctuations end up being integrated together so you won’t notice a difference between frames.

Появления на рынке нового широкоугольника Zeiss Distagon T* 3,5/18 я ждал с заметной долей нетерпения — отчасти, поскольку это одно из моих любимых фокусных, отчасти потому что было интересно, так ли хорош этот фикс, как про него говорят в интернетах. Тем более Рослетт писал, что сей широкоугольник не уступает эталонному никкору 14-24/2.8.
В свое время у меня был достаточно редкий Nikkor 18/3.5 и на тот момент он меня весьма устраивал по картинке. Но — жизнь фотодрочера нелегка, полна тревог и неожиданностей, вдруг купился знаменитый Distagon 21/2.8 и в силу нищебродства никкор пришлось продать, тем паче что один из моих хороших клиентов очень его просил.
Со временем стало понятно, что и от дистагона на камере кнопка «шедевр» не отросла, и 18 мм по-прежнему хочется. Но что собой представляет никкор я уже знал, а потому решил дождаться нового дистагона и посмотреть, за что же, собственно, дедушка Кобаяси хочет с меня слупить столько денег. В качестве оппонентов выступили Zuiko 18/3.5 и Nikkor 18/3.5 Ai-S. Zuiko, кстати, тоже было очень интересно попробовать в деле, поскольку объектив очень редкий и, по отзывам, чуть ли не эталонный ультраширик пленочной эпохи. - Задание №9 : “Нормальный мир” и Конкурс “Летний Портрет”. Итак – идея очень простая. Возьмите любой из имеющихся у вас объективов. Попробуйте выставить фокусное соответствующее 35мм на пленочной камере (то бишь 17.5мм где то для Олимпусоводов, 35 для людей с ФФ, и где то около 24мм для тех у кого кропы 1.5/1.6). Заклейте зум-кольцо (если таковое есть) лентой к черту. Или по крайней мере попробуйте убрать от него руки и не двигать его вообще, используя лишь кольцо фокусировки (если вы его пользовать будете, если нет – просто не трогайте там ничего больше).
- Pixel Fixer. Эта весьма полезная софтинка удаляет битые пиксели прямо из RAW-файлов. Поддерживаются камеры Nikon, Canon, Pentax и Leica M8.
Hot pixels (sometimes called stuck pixels) appear as brightly coloured spots in your images. They are often more noticeable with slow shutter speeds or high ISO settings. Given the location of these hot pixels, Pixel Fixer can automatically remove them from the raw data in one or more raw files. Dead pixels (pixels that always appear black) can also be removed by Pixel Fixer.

Once again, the equipment to be used is of utmost importance. Since you’ll be shooting really tiny creatures, you should ideally be using a dedicated macro lens. However, if you don’t have a dedicated macro, you can use what is known as the poor-man’s-macro lens. This isn’t a cheap quality sad lens, but basically a reversed lens that acts like a macro. A 50mm prime with a reversal ring should do the trick. You can add closeup filters and teleconverters if you want to increase your working distance, but know that every added piece of glass decreases the quality.

Women are probably the most self-critical people to photograph, and I should know, I’ve photographed over 10,000 of them throughout my career! Even models think they are fat, so there is no hope for us mere mortals!

То, что лайт-куб очень удобен для съемки большого количества предметки – распространенное заблуждение. Его использование часто не ускоряет процесс, а замедляет его – особенно при смене изделий или ракурса. Лайт-куб создает скорее не рабочую среду, а жесткие рамки, снижающие планку качества съемки. Лайт-куб – дешевое решение на один день, и если вы будете развиваться как профессионал, то очень быстро поймете, что пришло время организовать более полноценное рабочее место для качественной, творческой съемки.

Use a snoot – In these shots I used a snooted strobe to create highlights without casting light on the background. A snoot is any conical shaped tunnel to confine the light beam for a narrow point of focus. It doesn’t have to be fancy. I use the velcro pocket separators from my camera bag. I know photographers who use cardboard cereal boxes to make DIY snoots.

The other night I noticed Jimmie’s camera amidst the rubble of a circuit bending melee. It stood out for how intentionally ugly it was. He said that it was done in preparation for a trip overseas, where he wanted to make sure he kept his camera. After taping it up and otherwise camouflaging it, he developed a shooting technique where he folded our the screen, set the shots up, then held it up to his eye while shooting to make it look like a film camera. Film cameras, he figured would be of little or no interest to those with sticky fingers.

As most of you already know, the problem with the bounce flash technique, is that you will pick up the colour cast of the area that you are bouncing your flash off. When this colour cast is slightly warm, it is often simple enough just to switch to a Daylight White Balance. This slightly cold colour will off-set the additional warmth from the off-white surface you bounced your flash off.

Hyper-Program worked like Program mode, except that if you dialed the shutter button, it would immediately change to Shutter Priority (Tv), as you change to specific shutter speeds. Similarly, if you dialled the Aperture dial, then the camera instantly changed to Aperture Priority mode (Av), as you set the aperture. No need to switch mode dials on the top of the camera. Three photographers were told to deliver their RAW-files for closer inspection, when the three judges in January were assembled to select the winners in Picture of The Year in Denmark. This is the first time in the competition’s 35-year history that it has happened. One of the photographers, Klavs Bo Christensen, has accepted to show his RAW-files for the readers of pressefotografforbundet.dk. You can also hear a recording of the conversion between the judges about the photographer’s story.

I have been talking about doing this experiment for a long time, but have never gotten to it until this weekend. It is possible to process your own film using coffee. Hard to believe, I know, but it works. The other ingredient besides vitamin C and coffee is washing soda. It was a little hard to track down, but you might look in the laundry section of your local grocery store. Here is a YouTube video showing how it is done.

Свет — один из важнейших элементов снимка, и не надо считать эту фразу избитой. Ведь даже имея всё возможное и невозможное фотооборудование, без света (а точнее, правильного света) вы ничего не добьетесь. Само слово „фотография” — производное от двух греческих корней: „фотос” (свет) и „графо” (пишу), то есть вместе получается нечто вроде „расписываю светом”. Да, именно этими словами и можно описать суть фотографии.

The bouquet toss is one of the high points at the wedding reception. It involves a lot of the guests participating and is always good fun. For me, this series of images covers two two-page spreads in the wedding album. As the wedding photographer shooting the bouquet toss, we need to cover it thoroughly. Let me walk you through how I put that series of images together.
- С миру по нитке: cобираем резкий кадр. Есть у меня пара кадров, снятых таким образом — а я и не знал, что этот прием широко применяется. Не то, чтобы я претендовал на ноу-хау, но тем не менее. Надо было CS4-й фотошоп ставить.
Сделайте с той же точки и с той же диафрагмой (а то и более широкой – все равно уж мучаться, так почему бы не размыть фон покрасивее) несколько кадров, стараясь не слишком перемещать объектив (чтобы сохранить пропорции) и меняя лишь точку фокусировки, либо перемещая кольцо фокусировочное руками.
- Lightroom против Capture One Pro – cтолкнем лбами. Лично я давно решил, что родного конвертера от Nikon — Capture NX при всех его недостатках мне вполне хватает. Кто еще мечется — хорошая статья от «Простых фокусов» в подмогу.
Сегодня вопрос выбора конвертора RAW для фотографа как вопрос религии или принадлежности к определенной системе оптики – каждый для себя найдет кучу причин не пользоваться тем, что ему не нравится. В случае с CaptureOne Pro (в нашем случае, версия 4.5.2) и Adobe Photoshop Lightroom (версия 2.2), ситуация осложняется еще и тем, что подход, задумка и структура программ сильно различаются. Тем не менее, мы их все равно сравним – тем более, что для этого есть куча доводов, один из которых – огромная популярность обоих пакетов. Сегодня, конечно, поклонников у Lightroom гораздо больше, чем у CaptureOne, однако, это еще не означает, что он лучше или хуже – просто более распространенный.
